Furious, Jules throws him out of her car. Still pursuing Dale, Kirby drives to the ski lodge where she is staying but learns she has a boyfriend. Kevin confesses his love for her, and the two sleep together but the next morning, Alec comes by to apologize to Kevin for attacking him the night before. Alec is shocked to find Leslie there and the two argue over his infidelity. Wendy meets her father at a caf. Jules has been fired from her job and fallen behind on her credit card payments; as a result, her possessions have been seized. Jules locks herself in her apartment and opens the windows, intending to freeze to death. The friends attempt to coax her out, but she is unresponsive. Kirby fetches Billy, who landed a job at a gas station courtesy of Kevin, to calm Jules down. Billy convinces Jules to come back out. Wendy moves into her own place, where Billy visits and informs her that he is getting a divorce and moving to New York City. The two make love as a going away present. At the bus station, the group gathers once more to say goodbye to Billy. Billy urges Alec to make up with Leslie but Leslie declares that she does not want to date anyone for a while. Andrew Mc. Carthy as Kevin Dolenz, a writer for the The Washington Post with a sullen streak. Rob Lowe as Billy Hicks, a saxophonist . Elmo's Fire isn't drama, it's gossip, and peculiarly early- adolescent gossip. The turbidly self- important treatment of these vacuous college graduates, each one a 'type', is like a TV sitcom without jokes. Elmo's Fire is so depressing a portent of Hollywood's teen sycophancy because it not only devotes itself to stupid kids, it accepts their view of the world without any real criticism.. The sole survivor of the general disaster is Ally Sheedy, who manages to make something charming out of the yup petulance. Elmo's Fire falls midway between The Big Chill and The Breakfast Club. Its characters are old enough to enjoy the first flushes of prosperity, but still sufficiently youthful to keep their self- absorption intact. But soon enough, they will be forced to give up their late- night carousing at a favorite bar and move on to more responsible lives. In the film's terms, which are distinctly limited, this will mean finding a more sedate hangout and learning to go there for brunch.. St. Elmo's Fire is most appealing when it simply gives the actors a chance to flirt with the camera, and with one another. When it attempts to take seriously the problems of characters who are spoiled, affluent and unbearably smug, it becomes considerably less attractive. Elmo's Fire holds a 4. Rotten Tomatoes, with 1. Collie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article is about the collie group of dog breeds and landraces. For other uses of the word . The type originated in Scotland and Northern England. The collie is a medium- sized, fairly lightly built dog, with a pointed snout. Many types have a distinctive white pattern over the shoulders. Collies are very active and agile, and most types of collies have a very strong herding instinct. Collie breeds have spread through many parts of the world (especially Australia and North America) and have diversified into many varieties, sometimes with mixture from other dog types. Some collie breeds have remained as working dogs, used for herding cattle, sheep and other livestock, while others are kept as pets, show dogs or for dog sports, in which they display great agility, stamina and trainability. While the AKC has a breed they call . There are usually major distinctions between show dogs and those bred for herding trials or dog sports. They typically display great agility, stamina and trainability and more importantly sagacity. Common use of the name . Many collie types do not actually include . Cattle- herding types are more stocky. The fur may be short, flat, or long, and the tail may be smooth, feathered, or bushy. Collies can have both naturally long or naturally bobbed tails. Some breed clubs historically dock the tail. The tail can be carried low with an upward swirl or twist or high over the back. The tail never curls at the base or touches the back. Each breed can vary in coloration, with the usual base colors being black, black- and- tan, red, red- and- tan, or sable. They often have white along with the main color, usually under the belly and chest, over the shoulders, and on parts of the face and legs, but sometimes leaving only the head colored . Merle coloration may also be present over any of the other color combinations, even in landrace types. The most widespread patterns include sable, black- and- white, and tricolour (black- and- tan and white) also known as black sable. Temperament. The Border Collie is also the breed most in need of a job, while other collie breeds fit well into an active family lifestyle. When in fit working condition they are able to run all day without tiring, even over very rough or steep ground. They are often intensely loyal. Dogs of collie type or derivation occupy four of the first sixteen ranks in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs, with the Border Collie being first. These characteristics generally make working strains suitable for agility; in addition to herding work they are well suited to active sports such as sheepdog trials, flyball, disc dog and dog agility. Working strains have strong herding instincts, and some individuals can be single- minded to the point of obsessiveness. Collies can compete in herding events. All collie dog breeds have proved to be highly trainable, gentle, loyal, intelligent, and well suited as pets. They are often more suitable as watchdogs than as guard dogs, though the individual personalities of these dogs vary. The temperament of these breeds has been featured in literature, film, and popular television programs. The novels of Albert Payson Terhune, which were very popular in the United States during the 1. AKC collies. More famously, the temperament and intelligence of the Rough Collie were exaggerated to mythic proportions in the character Lassie, which has been the subject of many films, books, and television shows from 1. The Lassie character was featured in a book titled Lassie Come Home by Eric P. One such story was most likely the documented tale of . While the dogs who played Lassie on- screen were from AKC lines, the actual Tootsie looked nothing like them, although she did come from a collie breeder. Some collie breeds (especially the Rough Collie and the Smooth Collie) are affected by a genetic defect, a mutation within the MDR1 gene. Affected dogs also show a lower cortisol concentration than normal. This is a stem cell disorder. Puppies with this disorder are quite often mistaken for healthy Blue Merles, even though their colour is a silver grey. Affected puppies rarely live more than 6 months. For a puppy to be affected, both the sire and the dam have to be carriers of the disorder. Collie types and breeds. Many of them are working herding dogs, but some have been bred for conformation showing and as pets, sometimes losing their working instincts in the course of selection for appearance or for a more subdued temperament. Dog used in Australia for herding cattle, one of several Australian dogs interbred with the wild Dingo. Dogs of this type are also known as Queensland Heeler, Blue Heeler and Red Heeler. Powerful build, erect ears, short- haired, mottled grey or red with solid colour patches on head, and no white. Australian Collie or . Not actually a breed, but a popular cross between two other collie types, Australian Shepherd and Border Collie. Appearance intermediate between parents. Australian Kelpie. Developed in Australia from collies originally brought from Scotland and northern England. Erect ears, short- haired, usually black, black- and- tan or red- and- tan, with white limited to chest and toes. Australian Shepherd: Derives its name from the sheep imported from Australia in the 1. Western United States. Used as both a drover and guardian of sheep and cattle. Ancestry almost certainly includes British collie types and Basque and Spanish sheepdogs. Shaggy mid length coat in every colour including merle, half prick ears, bobbed tail, and (very important) eyes of different colour, heterochromia very common. Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog. Dog with stumpy tail used in Australia for herding cattle. Erect ears, lightly built, short fur, mottled grey or red with no white, and either no tail or a very short tail. Bearded Collie. Now largely a pet and show breed, but still of collie type, and some are used as working dogs. The Beardie has a flat, harsh, strong and shaggy outer coat and a soft, furry undercoat. The coat falls naturally to either side without need of a part. Long hair on the cheeks, lower lips, and under the chin forms the beard for which he is known. All Bearded Collies are born black, blue, brown, or fawn, with or without white markings. Some carry a fading gene, and as they mature, the coat lightens, darkening again slightly after one year of age. A puppy born black may become any shade of gray from black to slate to silver. The dogs that are born brown will lighten from chocolate to sandy, and the blues and fawns show shades from dark to light. Dogs without the fading gene stay the color they were when they were born. The white only occurs as a blaze on the face, on the head, on the tip of the tail, on the chest, legs, feet, and around the neck. Tan markings occasionally appear on the eyebrows, inside the ears, on the cheeks, under the root of the tail and on the legs where the white joins the main color. Blue Lacy. Grey or red all over, short hair, floppy ears. Derived partly from the English Shepherd, with other non- collie breeds. Border Collie. The most well known breed for herding sheep throughout the world. Originally developed in Scotland and Northern England. Not always suitable for herding cattle. Ears semi- erect or floppy, fur silky or fairly long, but short on face and legs; red, black, black- and- tan or merle, all usually with white over shoulders, alternatively mostly white with coloured patches on head. Coat can be either long or short. Cumberland Sheepdog. An extinct breed similar to the Border Collie and possibly absorbed into that breed. An ancestor of the Australian Shepherd. Erect or semi- erect ears, dense fur, black with white only on face and chest. English Shepherd. Developed in the US from stock of Farm Collie type originally from Britain. Floppy ears, thick fur, red, black or black- and- tan, with white over shoulders. Not to be confused with the very different Old English Sheepdog. Farm Collie. Landrace herding dog found on many livestock farms in Britain, in the US (derived from British dogs), and perhaps elsewhere. In Britain, often simply called . Very variable in size and appearance. German Coolie, Koolie or Collie. Developed in Australia, probably from British collies, but may have included dogs from Germany and Spain. Developed in New Zealand from a mixture of breeds, probably including some collie . Larger and more heavily built than most collies, floppy ears, most commonly black- and- tan with little white. Lurcher. Not a breed, but a cross of collie (or other herding dog or terrier) with Greyhound or other sight hound. Traditionally bred for poaching, with the speed of a sight hound but more obedient and less conspicuous. Variable in appearance, but with greyhound build: floppy ears, tall, slender, with small head, deep chest and . Developed in the US from British collies. Variable in size, erect or semi- erect ears, short fur, black or red usually with some white on face and chest. New Zealand Heading or Eye Dog. Developed in New Zealand from Border Collie heritage, and used to bring sheep towards the shepherd especially with strong eye contact and no barking. Old English Sheepdog. Modern dogs larger than most collies, no tail, floppy ears, long silky hair (including on face), usually grey and white. Not to be confused with the English Shepherd. Scotch Collie, separated into two varieties or breeds: Rough Collie and Smooth Collie. They are still used for herding as well as for showing. They were developed in the highlands of Scotland which is why they needed a profuse coat and . There are four recognised colors: sable, tri- color, blue merle and color headed white. Non recognized colors are: bi- black, sable merle, harlequin, red merle, red tricolor and black and tan. There are three different coat types of Rough Collies: Brandwyn (fluffy coats), Parader (flat long coats) and the working type (medium length coats). Curse of the crystal skulls: The real life story of the new Indiana Jones movie The lamplight glimmered softly, turning an ordinary suburban sitting room into a place of eerie mystery. Before us, in the semi- darkness, sat Carole Wilson, a renowned psychic whose strange powers had previously been used by police officers trying to solve murder cases and find the missing. But now they were being deployed in an attempt to unlock the secret of one of the most extraordinary objects we had ever beheld - a life- size human skull fashioned from breathtakingly pure crystal. As it was placed on a small turntable so that Carole could touch and manipulate it from all angles, specks of light danced and flickered on its surface. Then Carole closed her eyes and emitted an unearthly high- pitched hum before speaking in an otherworldly, staccato voice, nothing like her own. It was not made using what you call the physical. It was moulded into its present form by thought. Set during the Cold War, the film revolves around the intrepid archaeologist's attempts to stop the Soviets abusing the information harboured within the mysterious skulls. But while Dr Jones's escapades are likely to delight summer cinema audiences, our research suggests that the real skulls have a more sinister purpose: to warn of a series of catastrophes that will soon engulf the world. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull The events which led us to our haunting encounter with Carole Wilson began when we were on holiday, touring Mayan ruins in Guatemala. It was there that we first heard the myth describing the existence of the 1. The tales told how they were the size of human skulls, had moving jaws and were said to speak or sing. They were also thought to contain answers to some of the greatest mysteries of the universe. According to Mayan teachings, all 1. But there was one proviso: the human race must first be sufficiently evolved, morally and spiritually, so as not to misuse the information. It was the perfect yarn to take home from an overseas adventure, but we dismissed it as pure fiction. Until, in neighbouring Belize, we discovered something that would change our view completely. There we learned of a buried treasure, uncovered during an archaeological dig in the Twenties. To our amazement, the precious find had been a crystal skull. The Belize skull was rumoured to have supernatural powers and many who had spent time alone with it described a glowing aura and said bizarre filmic images appeared inside it. The claims seemed far- fetched, but we had to know more and travelled deep into the interior to the place where the skull was found - the 'lost' Mayan city of Lubaantun. The city was rediscovered in 1. Frederick Mitchell- Hedges, the flamboyant British explorer said to have inspired the character of Indiana Jones. Once an impressive city of six square miles, with pyramids, palaces and a huge amphitheatre designed to hold 1. Lubaantun is now an almost forgotten archaeological site. It was so deserted that we were relieved to find it was still manned by a local Mayan guide named Catarino Cal. Horrifying and mesmirising.. After some discussion he produced from his pocket a tattered old photo of a crystal skull. It was at once horrifying and mesmerising. To our surprise, Catarino told us that the photograph had been given to him by Mitchell- Hedges' daughter, Anna, the very person who had discovered the skull in 1. She had made several trips back to the site, the last in 1. That was the closest we got to the skulls on that trip, but when we returned to Britain, we couldn't put the story out of our minds. We had asked Catarino to find out if Anna was still alive, but didn't expect to hear back. And then, a few weeks later, a letter arrived from Catarino. He had found Anna's address. We wrote to her, and the reply brought welcome news: Anna, at the age of 8. Canada. She described how, at the time of the discovery, she had gone out to Belize to help her father with his archaeological work. Newly freed from the constraints of an English girls' boarding school, she had a spirit of adventure that had led her to make her dramatic discovery on the afternoon of her 1. The site, usually busy back then, had stood strangely silent that day. They had been worn out by the heat. Then, way down below, through a crack in the side of the pyramid, I could see something shining back at me. I immediately ran to wake my father. The following morning, Anna and her father returned to the pyramid. The source of the shimmering couldn't be accessed from the bottom of the structure so her father's men began moving stones from the top. It was backbreaking work but finally, after several weeks, they had created a hole big enough for Anna to pass through into the pyramid's gaping interior. So I picked it up, wrapped it in my shirt and shouted for the men to pull me up as fast as they could. We flew out to Canada and met Anna in her neat modern bungalow in the town of Kitchener, near Toronto. As she took us into her small sitting room to 'meet' the crystal skull, she cautioned us: . The skull was flawless; we were gazing at perfection. It was remarkably accurate anatomically, the same size and shape as a small adult's head, and yet almost totally transparent. The way the light played around it was hypnotic. It was as though the skull was holding us there, somehow communicating with our unconscious minds. EXPLORER, FREDERICK MITCHELL- HEDGES WITH HIS FRIEND, LADY RICHMOND BROWN IN 1. We were mesmerised - and even more so after Anna told us about the results of tests conducted on the skull by the computer company Hewlett Packard. The company uses crystals in many electronic devices, so their scientists are world experts on their make- up. Since quartz crystal does not corrode, decay or otherwise change with time, it is impossible to date, but their tests showed that the object had been carved from one solid block of crystal. This was astonishing given that pure, rock quartz crystal is only slightly softer than diamond and therefore incredibly difficult to carve. Such an object would be impossible to make with modern tools because the vibration produced would shatter it. Instead, scientists suspect it was made by hand over many generations, a process which would have taken at least 3. What most surprised them, however, was that our 'primitive' ancestors had made the skull from exactly the type of quartz crystal that is a key component in computers today. Was this mere coincidence, or could it be proof of a civilisation even more advanced than our own? Indeed, could the crystal skull be a device for storing information just as the legend said? At first, it seemed too far- fetched that a lump of rock could contain the great revelations of our forefathers. But if a silicon crystal chip in a computer can store gigabytes of memory, then why shouldn't a piece of raw quartz crystal contain secrets of its own? But what might that information be? Our investigations took a fascinating turn when Anna introduced us to psychic Carole Wilson, a quiet, smartly- dressed woman in her 5. U. S, Canada and Britain. Ghostly and dramatic. She claimed to be able to channel whatever 'intelligence' lay within the skull. During our ghostly and dramatic session with Carole and the skull, the voice emanating from her somehow anticipated our thoughts. We were about to ask whether there were other crystal skulls as the legend had said, but the voice responded before we had uttered a word. There are still some that have not yet been given form and others which remain safely under your ocean bed. When all receptacles are placed together, you will be keepers of wondrous knowledge. It spoke of the shifting of the planet's magnetic field, rising seas and vanishing land mass. And there was something about the prophecies that made them seem terrifyingly real. In fact, as we returned to England, one already appeared to be coming true, the prediction that other such skulls would soon be discovered. When we contacted experts at the British Museum about the Mitchell- Hedges skull, we learned, to our surprise, that they had long had a crystal skull of their own. Bought from Tiffany's in New York in 1. Aztec origin and to have been looted from Mexico by a soldier of fortune. And they put us in touch with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, one of the most celebrated museums in the world, which had recently come into possession of yet another skull. Theirs had been sent through the mail by an anonymous donor who had experienced several personal tragedies since acquiring the skull and committed suicide shortly after posting it. Harrison Ford (left) as Indiana Jones, co- starring with Shia La. Beouf in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Since the skull's arrival, the museum said, they had suddenly started getting calls about similar artefacts from around the world - as if their own skull was communicating with the others. In an attempt to solve the mystery, the British Museum brought some together in London to establish their authenticity once and for all. When the results of the investigation were announced, we were surprised to learn that marks left by a grinding wheel had been found on both the British Museum and Smithsonian skulls which, we were told, suggested that they were of more modern European manufacture. This, however, was later contradicted by American experts who claimed there was evidence that ancient civilisations had used grinding wheels for carving, too. But the real shock lay in the British Museum's pronouncement on two other skulls, which had been loaned for analysis by private individuals. While the museum had readily accepted them as part of its study, it now refused to comment on what they revealed. This led us to wonder just what the British Museum had discovered and why they were trying to hide it? Had they unearthed information too sensitive for public consumption?
